BEHIND THE LENS
My journey into visual storytelling started when I was 14. A family friend gave me an old 35mm Ricoh SLR—nothing fancy, just a bit worn and unpredictable. I didn’t really think about it as a career back then. I just liked the feeling of noticing things and trying to hold onto them through a camera.
In 1996, I joined the South African Air Force and trained as an aerial photographer. That period shaped me more than I realised at the time. It was structured, disciplined work, often under pressure, and it taught me to be precise—but also to stay calm and observant, no matter the situation.
In 2000, I moved to the United Kingdom and worked as a clinical photographer within the NHS. That was a very different world—quiet, detailed, and deeply human in its own way. Alongside that, I started building my own commercial photography work and slowly found my way into video, learning as I went and figuring things out project by project.
Now, with over 18 years of international experience, I work as a freelance photographer, videographer, and lecturer based in South Africa.I still enjoy the same thing I did at 14—apturing moments and shaping them into meaningful visual stories.
If you like what you’ve read and it feels like a good fit, I’d be happy to collaborate.
